Now THIS is what internet TV is about.
Yesterday was the Monaco Grand Prix, the most prestigious race on the Formula 1 calendar and, for it’s often processional on track action is still the essence of Grand Prix racing. The glitz, the glamour, the celebs, the yachts the street circuit has it all (except overtaking maybe).
The thing about Monaco is that it being such a tight track any slightly out of the ordinary event can turn a race won in qualifying into a wonderfully chaotic experience. Yesterday the race started in the rain. Stage set for a good ‘un then.
Unfortunately I was out all day and was unable to watch the race live, and in general my attitude towards television is that nothing is important enough to record so I don’t have a VCR let alone a PVR or recordable DVD. So I was going to miss the race. Or was I?
Thanks to ITV and their online catch up service I was able to return home from my day out, plug my laptop into the living room telly, and watch the full ITV coverage as soon as I got in - even before anyone managed to accidentally ruin the result for me!
What’s even better is unlike the Channel 4 version of On Demand TV over the internet which installs a p2p client and eats your bandwidth even when you aren’t watching it, ITV shows play right in your browser…well they do require you to install Microsoft’s “Silverlight” first, but let’s be honest most of us are going to have to do that at some point anyway like it or not.
One day we’ll be able to watch all TV shows like this.
